#SHELVED 02 | Miss Read Books Review

Updated: Oct 12

This week's read was THE HOUSE OF SHATTERED WINGS by Aliette De Bodard.

I love rich worlds -- worlds that will sweep you off your feet and make you forget the misery of the 'now' times. Especially in 2020. De Bodard's House of Shattered Wings is at its bones a solid murder mystery set in a magically devastated Paris (of the late nineteenth century). In this world, magic is the destroyer and its power is craved by all. After all, in this war ruined Paris, strength is a key condition to surviving a polluted world.

The rotating cast of perspectives in the novel was a helpful device in understanding the rules and limitations of magic in the world, as well as its consequences. Although magic is deemed the destroyer in De Bodard's Paris, it is highly coveted -- and that makes it volatile. Power is the currency that passes between the survivors in this world -- the gangs of poor and the deteriorating Houses who only stand tall because of the magic they hoard.

As with many first books in a trilogy — The House of Shattered Wings left me screaming at the ending. A character I had gotten pretty attached to was killed off (maybe I should have seen it coming, but I didn’t and it HURT y’all). De Bodard built an incredibly detailed (and completely convincing) world and I’m not ready to leave it quite yet.
